A Mother's Life Changing Experience in a Neonatal ICU
The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) is an environment where infants born very prematurely go to receive care. The length of stay can range and includes invasive clinical procedures, frequent handling, and high levels of visual and auditory stimulation. Throughout this experience, the infant’s parents are go through a range of emotions including helplessness, fear or anxiety over their child’s health and survival all in the controlled environment of the NICU.
Due to the medical urgency and needs of their child, the psychological impact to parents is not always taken into perspective in the treatment approach. During this presentation, our guest presenter shares insights as to how emotional intelligence changed her maternal experience of the NICU and created a lifelong passion in sharing all the ways emotional intelligence can impact lives. Mary M. Smith serves as the President of the Society of Emotional Intelligence – North Florida Chapter. The Society of Emotional Intelligence (SoEI) is a non-profit educational and professional organizations that focus on supporting, encouraging, and educating our communities on Emotional Intelligence (EI).
Mary M. Smith directs the Human Resources operations for the Florida Department of Children and Families (DCF) in 20 Northeast Florida counties, including Jacksonville, Gainesville and Daytona Beach Florida. She has a broad range of experience that encompasses employee and labor relations, organizational development, training and development, performance management, employee retention and recruitment, data analysis and strategic planning. She is also an adjunct professor for Northwest University and Edward Waters College. Mary received her BS degree in Business Management from the historical black college of Albany State University and her MBA from the University of Phoenix. She is a certified facilitator for VitalSmarts Crucial Conversations as well as a certified Myers Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) Practitioner. She also holds a Yellow Belt through the Florida Sterling Council and is a Certified Labor Relations Professional. In 2014 she was awarded the prestigious honor of being a recipient of the Jacksonville Business Journal 40 under 40 and BlackPages USA 20 under 40.
